Passing on Tradition
Farah’s teaching experience began when she was just a teenager, having taught other forms of dance to children prior to her kathak training. In 1998, Farah began assisting Pandit Chitresh Das in his classes at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Soon thereafter, she began teaching at his institution, the Chhandam School of Kathak, along with continuing to assist him at SFSU, Stanford University, and his various teaching engagements world-wide.
A former senior instructor at the Chhandam School of Kathak, Farah was instrumental in the training of students of all ages and was responsible in opening and having directed many branches of the school throughout her teaching career with the institution.
Many of the students that began their study with Farah went on to join the Chhandam Youth Dance Company, an audition based pre-professional youth dance company of the next generation of kathak artists.
Outside of Chhandam, Farah has taught classes and given numerous lecture demonstrations and master classes at elementary schools throughout the United States, including Alonzo King LINES Ballet Summer Program, the India Community Center in Milpitas, the Oakland School of the Arts, St. Mary’s College, San Francisco State University, University of California, Santa Cruz, the San Mateo Parks and Recreations Department, and many more.
Currently, Farah is focusing on one-on-one training with a select number of students, as well as partnering with other organizations to offer group classes for beginning children and adults. Farah has also begun to conduct classes and workshops in Pakistan through partnerships with various educational and cultural institutions.
